Concrete Dyes vs Concrete Acid Stains

Although concrete acid stains have been used for many decades to provide impressive color transformations, concrete dyes have emerged which also deserve equal praise. These underrated coloring agents can achieve vibrant tones simply not possible with concrete stains alone. Concrete Stains normally come in about 8 to 10 neutral colors whereas with concrete dyes almost any color is achievable.

Concrete pigment dyes can get the professional applicator or the residential D-I-Y-er  into more vibrant colors such as yellow, blue, red, green and purple to name a few, The nice thing about working with concrete dyes is that you can mix them at the job site to obtain the desired color. Concrete dyes are often used in conjunction with acid stains to produce a variegated look and, in most cases, complement the already stained floor. Translucent dyes penetrate the concrete drying in only a few minutes in most climates with minimal cleaning required following the application. Therefore, the applicator completes the job about 60% faster than with a typical acid stain due to reduced dry time and less cleaning. The pigment dyes should be protected with a topical sealer like Concrete Sealer X-3 for a natural finish, Concrete Sealer X-4 for a gloss finish or Concrete Sealer X-5 for a semi-gloss or satin finish. The dyes are a powerful solution in virtually any application when the installer is seeking rich mottling effects, color layering effect or for a more even solid color with minimal installation time.

Stone Technologies Corp. offers a wide range of UV stable acetone based and water based dyes in a vast array of 20 colors as shown below including subtle earth tones, vibrant hues, and pastels which can be used in all types of interior and exterior applications. They can either be applied as an individual color or combined to provide a multitude of different hues, shades, mottled and faux natural stone effects. If you are the more skilled artisan you can use them to form any custom made pattern or picture possible, which is only limited by the boundaries of your imagination. The water based dyes are supplied as ready to use products that are very easy to apply and they are odorless and VOC (volatile organic content) free. The acetone based dyes are faster drying and are supplied in a concentrated form which has to be mixed with acetone (available at most DIY stores) at the job site. The dyes are available in 1 quart, 1 gallon and 5 gallon sizes, larger size containers are available upon request.

The coverage rate of both the acetone based and water based dyes is approximately 500 sf per gallon for each application and two applications are recommended. The water based dyes are applied with a pump up sprayer approximately 24 inches from the surface at 40 to 80 degrees F while ensuring that the dye does not puddle or accumulate in any low lying areas (clean up with soap and water). The acetone based dyes are applied with an acetone resistant sprayer approximately 24 inches from the surface at 40 to 80 degrees F while ensuring that the dye does not puddle or accumulate (clean up with xylene or acetone).

How to Seal A Concrete Countertop

Concrete Countertops are very porous like a sponge and the purpose of a sealer is to provide an internal protective barrier that will protect the surface from stain and water intrusion.

There are three main types of sealers available which are ;

  • 1-Reactive Densifying and Hardening Sealers
  • 2-Impregnating Water and Stain Repellent Sealers
  • 3-Decorative Gloss or Satin Finishes

1- Concrete Sealer X-1 and Concrete Sealer X-2 are permanent densifying and hardening silicate based deep penetrating sealers which means they are guaranteed to last for the life of your concrete countertop because they chemically bond to the concrete to become an part of its integral structure. They are highly effective in making your concrete countertop physically stronger and denser, protecting it against dusting, efflorescence and stains from acids like vinegar, lemon juice, mustard, oils greases and cooking oils.

2- Concrete Sealer X-3  is a water based special blend of polysiloxanes/silanes which crosslink below the surface of the concrete making the concrete surface water and stain repellent allowing spills to be removed more easily. This sealer can either be applied alone or on top of Concrete Sealer X-1 or Concrete Sealer X-2 to provide double protection of the concrete with both deep sealing and a repellent finish.

3- For Decorative Coatings –  You should make sure that your concrete is absorbent by placing a droplet of water on the surface of the concrete. If it absorbs within 20 seconds then you can  apply the sealers. If it does not then you should either acid etch or diamond grind the surface to open up the pores before sealing.  We do not recommend that you use these sealers with the any of the above products. We recommend two applications of Concrete Sealer X-4 to provide a gloss finish on concrete counter tops and for a satin or semi-gloss finish use Concrete Sealer X-5.

User Friendly Eco Concrete Etcher

Eco Concrete Etcher is a water-based non-hazardous, non-corrosive, biodegradable, odorless, VOC free, non-flammable concrete etching and cleaning solution. This advanced formula incorporates a special blend of organic chemicals and surfactants for the most effective user and environment friendly concrete etching solution available. It does not contain phosphoric or hydrochloric (muriatic) acids which present health and environmental risks including toxic fumes and corrosive run-off.

Traditionally concrete has been etched with hydrochloric acid also known as muriatic acid. The main disadvantages of muriatic acid is that it is a corrosive liquid made from hydrogen chloride gas which is very difficult to handle. It will aggresively corrode metal surfaces and it fumes excessively making it very difficult to use in enclosed spaces. It is also dangerous for human beings as contact with the skin causes burns, ulcers and dermatitis of the skin. Contact with the eyes can lead to partial or complete loss of vision and the mouth, esophagus, and stomach can be burned after swallowing hydrochloric acid.

The threshold for tolerably safe exposure is 10 parts per million (ppm); even brief exposure to 35 ppm can irritate the throat. Individuals cannot stand being exposed to concentrations in the range of 50 to 100 ppm, and exposure to 1,300 to 2,000 ppm of hydrochloric acid is fatal. According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers Surveillance System In 2002, 3,452 individuals were exposed to hydrochloric acid of which 22 people had a severe reaction, with life-endangering medical complications that resulted in disability, and 2 died from exposure.

The problems of muriatic acid has led to the need for an environmentally and user friendly alternative and hence the development of Eco Concrete Etcher to eliminate the above risks and harmful effects. This product is also ideal for cleaning, degreasing and acid etching concrete floors, walls, basements, garages, factories, warehouses, driveways, swimming pools, patios, and containment areas prior to coating, staining or sealing. It can be used on concrete, masonry, cinder block, brick, mortar joints and grout to properly prepare substrates for optimum penetration and adhesion of stains, paints, industrial coatings, and sealers. It also removes dirt, clay, mortar deposits, rust and efflorescence and reduces the pH of new concrete which can burn off sealers, paints and stains.

Eco Concrete Etcher is supplied as a ready to use product available in quart bottles, 1 gallon jugs, 5 gallon pails, 30 gallon drums or 55 gallon drums which all ship as non hazardous. Eco Concrete Etcher covers approximately 100 to 200 sq. ft. per gallon depending on the concrete porosity. Apply with a pump up sprayer or watering can and scrub the surface with a stiff brush for 15 minutes without allowing the product to dry out. Rinsing thoroughly with water 2 or 3 times to neutralize the etching action.

In the video below an egg is lowered into the Eco Concrete Etcher solution and it can be seen that almost instantaneously the product begins to dissolve the calcium based shell of the egg. The product uses the same kind of reaction to react with the alkaline concrete to open up the pores to make it more absorbent for sealer application.

Colored Concrete Sealers for Patios, Walkways and Driveways

There are two ways to apply colored concrete sealers. You can either apply a sealer that has already has the pigment dyes built in to the sealer or you can apply the dye first and then apply a sealer over the top of the dye. The latter method although more labor intensive gives you a lot more flexibility because you can adjust the depth and shade of the color or apply multiple different colors before you seal it. Whichever method you decide to choose we recommend that you take advantage of the small 4 ounce spray sample bottles to test a small inconspicuous area to see how the color looks on your concrete before you commit to staining the entire area.

Our Colored Concrete Sealers

The colored concrete sealers are available in twenty UV stable colors that can be used in all exterior and interior applications. This enables you to seal and dye your concrete in a single process.  Any combination of the different colored sealers can be mixed together if desired to create your own individual unique color or pattern.

After you have decided on your color(s) you have to decide which type of sealer you want to apply. All of the sealers will make the concrete stain and water repellent. The difference between them is that the Colored Concrete Sealer X-3 leaves a natural or invisible finish, Colored Concrete Sealer X-4 leaves a gloss finish and Colored Concrete Sealer X-5 leaves a semi-gloss or satin finish.

We recommend two applications (coats) using either a medium nap (3/8″) roller or a sprayer for all of the sealers while the temperature is between 40 and 80 degrees F. Coverage rate in approximately 300sf per gallon for each application. For Concrete Sealer X-4 and Concrete Sealer X-5 we recommend that you wait 4 hours at the higher temperature and 6 hours at the lower temperature between applications. Concrete Sealer X-3 has to be applied quickly with a maximum time of 20 to 30 minutes between applications, so for large areas it should be applied in sections.

concrete-dye-colors

The “dye and then seal” method involves selecting your color first from one of the twenty UV stable dye colors available. They are available in an acetone base or a more environmentally friendly water carrier. The water based dyes are shipped as ready to use products and are easier to apply whereas the acetone based dyes are quicker drying and are shipped in concentrated form which has to be diluted upon receipt with acetone. The coverage rate of these dyes is approximately 500sf per gallon per application and two applications are recommended. When applying the dyes using a sprayer with a conical tip in a fine mist, brush or medium nap roller it is normal not to see a strong coloring on the first coat but the color will be much stronger on the second coat. Allow at least 30 minutes between applications and apply the dye at 40 to 80 degrees F. Multiple colored dyes can be used to create any type of intricate design that you can imagine.

Once you have completed your design, solid, mottled or faux pattern you have to decide which of the clear concrete sealers that you want to apply. If you do not want to disturb your pattern or design we recommend that you spray the sealer whereas if you want a more random pattern then use a roller as this will tend to move the dye around on the first application because it is not substantive to the concrete at this stage. All of the sealers will make the concrete stain and water repellent, the difference between them is that Concrete Sealer X-3 will leave a natural or invisible finish, Concrete Sealer X-4 will leave a gloss finish and Concrete Sealer X-5 will leave a semi-gloss or satin finish. With this method you also have the option of using the solvent based versions of these sealers, Concrete Sealer X-3S,  Concrete Sealer X-4S or Concrete Sealer X-5S. All sealers should be applied at 40 to 80 degrees F and for Concrete Sealer X-4, Concrete Sealer X-4S, Concrete Sealer X-5 and Concrete Sealer X-5S allow 4 to 6 hours between applications. Concrete Sealer X-S should be applied 2 to 4 hours apart and Concrete Sealer X-3 20 to 30 minutes apart. All sealers will achieve a full cure after 24 to 48 hours.

What is next in 2016?

As the end of the year approaches, it is customary to begin thinking of what’s next.

We try to assess what changes can be made to better our lives, our businesses and our relationships. We ask what can we do differently that will push us positively towards our anticipated outcomes.

In the spirit of this thinking, let’s discuss bitcoin and blockchain technologies.

Bitcoin and blockchain technologies are still in their infancy. Yet, millions of dollars have been invested and many companies have reaped tremendously from early adoption.

But, it’s important to note that the companies that have had the most success have done so by creating a foundation for the entire industry.

As when building a house, the foundation is the first and possibly the most important element. Without it, the house would fall, and any good builder knows that you have to give the foundation a chance to cure before building on top of it.

The companies we’ll list below have built a pretty solid foundation on top of the ground that the core developers provided. The only problem is, sleeping on a concrete slab can prove to be uncomfortable.

Enter the age of practicality.

The next steps

With the foundation laid, it is time to begin building practical solutions to real-world problems.

People want to put all kinds of things on the blockchain – from gold to furniture receipts. If it exists, someone has pitched that it should be on a blockchain. But the blockchain is not some magic wand that solves all problems.

The blockchain, at its core, is a database. It may be the Liam Neeson of databases, but still it’s a database.

This new age of practicality must be filled with companies solving real problems – problems that could not be solved before the gift Satoshi left for us (before returning to his alternate dimension).

We as an industry must be able to look into every industry and every discipline and see what challenges a distributed, immutable ledger can really solve.

We have debated on Reddit and other forums about what can be. But the new age must be filled with companies that not only see what can be, but build what should be.

We have to embrace people from all disciplines and lend a ear to what struggles they have. We have to then be creative enough to innovate through cross-discipline association.

The good examples

There are a handful of companies that have already prepared us for this future.

Companies like Blockcypher have become the Amazon Web Services for blockchain tech. They began with cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, litecoin and dogecoin, and because of this early versatility, can now easily create private blockchain solutions with their full suite of tools.

Companies like Coinbase and BitGo have become the ‘First National Banks of Bitcoin’, and are expanding to be Global Bitcoin and FX banks. They are providing a foundation for developers to build all types of transaction-heavy applications.

Elsewhere, Zapchain has taken full advantage of the simple API Coinbase provides for tipping to reimagine social communities.

Chain and the recently acquired Blockstack.io, focus (or focused) heavily on private blockchains and the tools to interact with them. R3 has done a great job of grabbing a piece of mindshare at some of the largest banks in the world, creating a foundation for meaningful engagement with incumbents.

Michael J Casey at MIT Media Lab is helping to lead us toward this age by encouraging the MIT Sloan School of Management and the MIT School of Engineering to work together on blockchain technology, combining two world-class schools at a world-class institution.

These types of actions will begin to create the walls of our industry’s house. They will help discover new problems that we can then solve with technology.

At Fluent, we’ve found a very specific problem by talking to industry leaders and professionals about issues in their supply chains. Equipped with our knowledge of blockchain technology, we were able to build a solution that will solve this problem in a way that was impossible without the core technology.

The beginning of the new year will be filled with optimism and glee, but when the confetti is cleared, we’ll need to move forward toward solving real issues.
